#211: How I Discovered the Modular Debut & Wrote a Book By Accident

June 19, 2020—Publishing a creative project can be overwhelming, but what if you chose the right pieces and let your masterpiece build itself, day by day?

You’d think drawing comics every day for a whole year was hard enough, but I guess I’m a glutton for punishment—so a couple of months into my 365 Challenge, I started writing a book at the same time.

Believe me, I know how insane that sounds.

But there’s a trick. I call it the “Modular Debut.” Basically, instead of trying to write a whole book (or movie script or album, etc), I broke the task out into little modular chunks and then synced them up with my challenge.

For example, most books are around 75,000 words, and a page is roughly 250 words, which means that if I write every day, I can finish a draft in about 300 days. Furthermore, I don’t have to write from scratch. I focus on one “idea” per day, which turns into a comic, which becomes a blog post cover photo.

It’s hard work, but very efficient.
