#282: Thumb Notes (the Handy Way to Tame Your ADHD w/o a To-Do List
August 21, 2020 — If your ADHD brain seems to ignore every reminder you set in front of it, then it’s time to start writing notes on the only place you can’t avoid looking at: your thumb.
Sometimes, I feel like I’m living in ADHD Ground Hog Day.
No matter how many to-do lists, notifications, and alarms I throw in my path, my creative brain just ignores them.
I’ve tried long, detailed lists, I’ve tried short lists, I’ve tried putting sticky notes on my computer, hanging pieces of paper from my ceiling, and even writing checklists on my forearm.
But none of it works consistently, and I’ve been getting frustrated — because let’s be honest…
Trying to control ADHD with a to-do list is like trying to stop a freight train with a thumbtack.
Tip: Thumb Note
I’ve been wanting to spend more time rough-sketching my daily comics, but I usually chicken out and head to Illustrator before I’ve fully explored my concept.
SO…I got the idea to write a focusing word on my thumb — the only place I can’t avoid looking at.
I started with the word “slow” to remind me to not rush my thinking, and it actually worked. I spent two hours rough-sketching ideas for today’s comic.
Turns out the decision-making system I needed was in my head all along, and I just needed a thumb to unlock it.
