#283: Happiness is Teaching Your Space How You Want to Move Within It
August 8, 2020 — Trying to be creative while you’re depressed is like trying to push a brick wall. You can’t stop them from existing, but practicing happiness keeps them far away from you.
Being creative is hard when I’m depressed.
It feels like living in an apartment that shrinks every time I stop moving.
Sometimes, I trick myself into scrolling my Instagram feed or browsing inspiration sites, or buying stuff, but these things are just wall-watching in disguise.
When I can’t make art, the only solution is to make art.
Sounds paradoxical, I know.
But my brain has limited resources, so it’s constantly reallocating them, based on my behavior.
It makes sense when you think about it.
Why on earth would your brain maintain a highway to creativity if the couch gets all the traffic?
Teach your space how you would like to move within it.
