#303: Sketching Longer is Scary, But Magic is Made in the Trenches
September 12, 2020 — It’s so tempting to stop sketching as soon as you hit creative block, but the best ideas emerge when you become willing to keep pushing, to suck in order not to suck.
The first sketch I made of this comic was ok.
There was a graph showing how the more time you spend sketching, the better your ideas turn out.
And I could have posted it.
Instead, I decided to mess with “good enough.”
Which is a scary thing to do because you could end up with something WORSE than what you had before!!!
But “good enough” isn’t all that safe either. It’s a no man’s land between success and failure — and the longer you stay there, the harder it is to leave.
Tip: Dig Down
As a creative, my first reaction to walls is to try and climb them (to try and make my art BETTER).
I’ve never had much luck with this.
A better solution is to dig DOWN — to be playful and intentionally make your art SUCK.
