#349: Stick to a Style (But What If Your Brand is Boring You?)

October 27, 2020 — Successful creatives focus on one style for a long time. But what if you get bored? This question came up a bunch of times in my 365 comics challenge. Here’s my solution.

One month into my 365 Comics challenge, I switched from black and white to black, white, and yellow.

Little did I know, that would be my last stylistic change for the next 319 days.

Of course, there were times when it felt like I was trapped inside a mustard-yellow prison cell with 3-pt bars — and all I wanted to do was break out.

But sticking to a style for the first time in my life taught me something important…

Boredom is a symptom of your perspective, not your limitations — there are no dead ends in art.

Tip: Zoom In

Because I was only drawing with yellow, I didn’t have to think about color — so I zoomed way in to composition, contrast, and spacing.

My tiny “box” started to feel huge.

What’s more, sticking to one style has made me super recognizable.

When you see an @fthelines comic, you KNOW it.

Sometimes it pays to think inside the box.
