January 22, 2023—If you’re always trying to silence your anger, how will you know what it has to say?

Back in 2020 when I was working as a shoe salesman my boss brought in this evil foot scanning machine, and the worst part was he wanted to have a meeting about it.

By that time I had self-radicalized into the cult of “barefoot shoes,” so you can imagine my horror, sitting through two hours of propaganda for some glorified Dr. Scholl’s knockoff designed to sell overpriced inserts that felt about as comfortable as standing on sack of potatoes.

Suffice it to say, I was fucking angry.

So angry, I’m surprised I didn’t fry my coworkers with radioactive energy — because the longer my boss droned on the closer I came to standing up and announcing: “SCREW THIS. I QUIT.”

But somehow the words never left the tip of my tongue, and I left work that night feeling angrier than ever.

Except it wasn’t anger. What I had swallowed was the bitter pill of resentment.
