This story is Part 3 of the Creative Orbit series, a step-by-step guide on how to combine your creative passions into one focus. Tune in tomorrow for Part 4.

June 2019 — I got sucked in. I’ve been watching #VanLife videos for two hours straight and I now know that it is my destiny to buy a Volkswagen Westfalia and travel around the country like the free fucking spirit that I am.

Tiny stoves, adorable dogs, hiking, living in the moment, and philosophizing about minimalism with a backdrop of rain falling softly on the roof.

It all seems so majestic.

Except for that part about needing $5,000 to $40,000 for my custom build. A minor detail. What matters is that I have a dream and when I make it happen, I’m finally going to be happy.

Because that’s how happiness works…right?

Problem: Dreams Lie to You

The snag I ran into almost immediately was that I needed money but hated the thing that was earning me money: freelance web design.

I fed myself a constant diet of #VanLife videos to stay motivated, but (unsurprisingly) I just got “motivated” to watch more videos.
