Day 122: Safety is Slavery

“In which I go on a mini-rant about the evils of modern society and explain how you will spend the rest of your life as a slave if you don’t take a leap of faith.”
—Andrew, F the Lines (:

Sometimes I think we’d be better off as cavemen. Seriously. Modern life has become so fucking complicated that there are now “Ultimate Guides” for basic human functions like getting people to talk to you.

Twelve thousand years ago, I wasn’t confused about how to help people. I didn’t need to take a Skillshare course on starting a business that “delivers value.” Nah. I just walked up to Grog and said…

Andrew give you mammoth meat. Next time, you give Andrew mammoth meat!

And that would be that.

Because the connection between cause and effect was clear.

Now, there are seven billion people milling around planet Earth and if I give $10 to Grog, it’s not at all clear that he’s going to return the favor.

He might be in another city or on a whole other continent.

He’d rather take the money and buy some DVDs from the bargain bin. Or spend time watching America’s Got Talent. Or do nothing at all. Because at least these things are safer than trusting another human being.

But is safe all that safe?

Honestly, the world is so full of trash products, fake companies, and soul-sucking jobs that safe has become a synonym for slavery.

We’re all stumbling through life blindfolded.

We can’t see what’s on the other side anymore—and so we have to leap.

I’ll trust you.

Will you trust me?
