Modern life keeps everyone stuffed to the gills with commitment — so much so that people are literally terrified of engaging in deep conversations.

They can’t risk falling apart. Or they can’t risk you falling apart.

All this technology…systems on systems on systems. Supposedly, we’re more connected than ever, but I don’t buy it. I think we’ve traded quality for quantity and that feeling of life moving at an “insane speed” locks people into flight-or-fight mode. We’re all rushing around, but to what end?

Even a year ago, I used to be able to call a friend and have an unplanned, raw conversation. But people don’t even pick up the phone anymore.

Too many telemarketers. Too much spam. Too many requests.

Spontaneous intimacy is rare and fleeting.

I met a kindred creative spirit at a networking event in December and our friendship didn’t even last a month. We had two amazing conversations and then she dissolved back into the chaos of her responsibilities.

It’s the loss of depth that hurts the most.

We’re a mile wide and an inch deep.

So thank you for digging down, Annie! 👏
