Sometimes You Make Good Art and Feel Bad (That’s Ok)

May 30, 2021 — Sometimes you don’t have the energy to feel your art, but you should keep making it anyway.

I feel nothing about this comic.

Which is weird because it’s a good comic…one of my favorites, actually.

The composition is solid, the colors are balanced, and it’s built around one clear idea.

But it ALMOST didn’t get made, because I’ve been depressed lately, and I’m tired of working in this robotic state where I feel absolutely nothing.

Depression is like making art through a telescope.

Hack: Trust in Nothing

The funny thing is, somewhere in between finishing the comic and writing this blog post, I started to feel happy.

I’ve been in this situation before, and I think what’s going on is that, when I’m depressed, I get obsessed with the textbook definition of creativity.

The high-flying artist to whom every spec of dust is an emotional bombshell.

But here’s the truth…

Sometimes you don’t have the energy for everything. You can either make good art and feel bad about it or make bad art and feel good about it.

Just keep creating, and you’ll turn out fine. (:
